New Years’ Goals

The Best Approach to Your New Year’s Healthy Lifestyle Goals

It’s that time of the year – January – time to focus on your New Year’s goals for a healthy lifestyle. How can you make this January the start of a lasting exercise and nutrition experience? Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way!

GO for the GOALS rather than “Resolutions”. What would you like to accomplish? Create a plan. This will help focus your efforts and increase your commitment level. When setting your goals, it is important to put them in writing. Written goals will help you track your progress, make your accomplishments more obvious, and identify possible problem areas that may need more attention.

Find someone to lean on. When you make changes, even the most beloved friends and family members may feel you are neglecting or even imposing on them. Identify the people who will support you the most. Their encouragement will make it easier for you to stick to your new behaviors. This support and nurturing will help you to maintain your commitment even during periods of stress and distractions.

Choose affirmations and rewards. It’s easier to establish new habits when you positively reinforce them. One way of doing this is through the use of affirmations that help to program the subconscious to your new efforts. Set up a reward system for sticking to your positive habits. Rewards may include extra time for yourself to do one of your favorite activities, treat yourself to a massage, a trip with a special someone, or a new activity that stimulates the mind. Avoid rewards related to food and drink, since these can often sabotage your goals in the long run.

New behaviors can be fulfilling if you stay committed long enough to turn them into new, permanent, healthy lifestyle habits. Set your goals, get motivated, and commit yourself to a healthy lifestyle this year!
